American Airlines to resume Iceland flights with Philadelphia route

American Airlines will launch a daily summer service between Keflavik Airport and Philadelphia on May 27 next year, mbl.is reports. The route will be operated with an Airbus A321neo aircraft carrying 196 passengers.

The service marks American Airlines’ return to Iceland after several years away.

The airline began flying between Keflavik and Dallas Fort Worth in 2018 and planned to add Philadelphia as a destination in 2020. Those plans were halted by the pandemic. American Airlines also ended its Iceland to Dallas service, a decision made in 2019.

“We at Keflavik Airport welcome American Airlines back and are pleased with this decision,” Ómar Svavarsson, the airport’s managing director of business, said in a statement.

“This new route strengthens our connection with North America and shows that this major airline has strong confidence in Iceland as a destination,” he said.

José A. Freig, American Airlines’ managing director of international operations and partnerships, said the company was excited to return to Iceland.

He said the route would give passengers from Iceland and the Nordic countries access to one of American Airlines’ fastest-growing connecting airports. From Philadelphia, passengers can continue to more than 100 destinations across the United States and elsewhere in the world.
