Survey examines housing challenges for university graduates

BHM and associations representing university-educated professionals are holding a public breakfast meeting at the Nordic House on Thursday from 9 to 10.30 a.m. to present detailed new findings on the position of university graduates in the housing market, mbl.is reports.

The survey, conducted by the University of Iceland’s Social Science Research Institute, focuses on people’s position in the rental and homeownership markets during the first 10 years after completing their studies. It also examines how housing costs and conditions in the housing market affect the financial position of university graduates.

The findings provide a new picture of how young university graduates establish themselves in the housing market, how easily they can enter the homeownership market and the challenges facing those who rent, according to a statement.

The meeting will be streamed live and is open to everyone.

Programme

At 9 a.m., BHM chair Kolbrún Halldórsdóttir will open the meeting.

Inga Rún Sæmundsdóttir and Rebekka Víðisdóttir of the University of Iceland’s Social Science Research Institute will present the survey findings.

Brynhildur Heiðar- and Ómarsdóttir, chair of Viska, will give a presentation titled “Do university graduates need non-profit housing?”

The panel discussion will include Dagur B. Eggertsson, chair of the government’s task force on housing issues; Helga Rósa Másdóttir, chair of the Icelandic Nurses’ Association; and Erlendur Örn Fjeldsted of the Association of Chartered Engineers in Iceland. The meeting will end at 10.30 a.m.

The survey is supported by BHM member associations and associations of university-educated professionals outside the alliance, including organisations representing doctors, nurses, engineers, civil engineers, computer scientists and pharmacists.
