Population decline noted in Suðuroy as Tvøroyar municipality reports growth
The population in Suðuroy has decreased by one percent over the past year, according to the latest statistics from the National Population Register published by the municipality of Tvøroyar.
As of August 6, Suðuroy had 4,617 residents, which is 46 fewer than on the same date last year.
However, the population in the municipality of Tvøroyar has seen a growth of one percent, reaching 1,760 residents—17 more than on August 6 last year.
In Sumba municipality, the population has also increased slightly, with one additional resident. In contrast, the other five municipalities within Suðuroy have experienced declines in population over the past year.
The most significant percentage decrease occurred in Fámjin, with a drop of 7.5 percent. Meanwhile, the largest absolute decline was recorded in Vágur municipality, where there were 34 fewer residents on August 6 compared to the previous year, bringing the current population to 1,346.
