Nearly all consultation bodies advised against increasing fishing days in defiance of the management plan, but a large majority of the Faroese parliament’s business committee has recommended approving the proposal, broadcaster KVF reports.
The minister received numerous consultation responses on a proposal to give group 5B more fishing days. Most advised against adopting it, including scientists at the Marine Research Institute and representatives of the industry.
Despite this, all but one member of the business committee recommended that the Faroese parliament approve the proposal when the committee issued its opinion on Monday.
Committee chair Ben Arabo said the entire system should be reviewed. He also opened the possibility of replacing fishing days with quotas for larger vessels.
