Landsnet, power outage, Suðurnes

Power was cut to parts of Suðurnes after three Landsnet high-voltage lines in the region tripped at around 4pm on Tuesday, mbl.is reported.

The outage shut down the Svartsengi power plant and left Grindavík and the Blue Lagoon without electricity. It is not yet known how long the outage will last.

According to a statement from HS Orka, Landsnet is investigating the fault. The lines affected are Svartsengislína 1 and 2, and the Njarðvík line.

Svartsengi is being operated on backup power to keep the plant’s lighting and control systems running and maintain hot- and cold-water production. Electricity generation at Svartsengi will remain offline until the lines are restored.
