Police in Vestmannaeyjar are warning people to take extra care at the release area near Ofanleitishamar, where large numbers of people are bringing puffin chicks to be released, mbl.is reports.

Police received reports that people had been standing outside a stone wall, and that two incidents had nearly ended badly. The people involved were children who had lost hold of a puffin chick and tried to retrieve it, bringing them dangerously close to the edge of a high cliff.

Police are urging people to act with caution and are advising those releasing puffin chicks to remain behind the wall.

“Puffin rescue creates fun and positive memories for families, and the condition for that is that everyone returns home safely,” the police in Vestmannaeyjar said in a Facebook post.
