Finnish lakes and groundwater levels remain exceptionally low

August rains have eased drought conditions in Finland, but drought is continuing especially in eastern Finland, Yle reports, citing the Finnish Environment Institute.

The areas most affected are Päijät-Häme, South Savo and North Karelia. Groundwater levels are exceptionally low in places across these regions.

Rain has raised levels in small and, in some places, medium-sized groundwater formations. Prolonged drought can dry up private wells and reduce the quality of well water.

Rain has improved soil moisture across much of Finland. However, moisture levels remain low for this time of year in South Savo, North Karelia, Päijät-Häme and Uusimaa.
