Goldin and Katz to headline Reykjavík University economics conference

Claudia Goldin, the 2023 Nobel laureate in economics, and Lawrence F. Katz, both professors at Harvard University, will be the keynote speakers at an economics conference at Reykjavík University tomorrow, mbl.is reports.

The conference, titled Economics and Society, is being held by Reykjavík University’s School of Business and Economics to mark the 10th anniversary of its bachelor’s degree programme in economics.

Goldin’s lecture will focus on women’s increasing independence and declining birth rates. Katz, the Elisabeth Allison Professor of Economics at Harvard, will discuss developing neighbourhoods with strong prospects for the future.

The conference will take place in room V101 at Reykjavík University from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is open to everyone free of charge, but attendees are asked to register because seating is limited.

After the lectures, Katrín Ólafsdóttir, an associate professor at Reykjavík University’s School of Business and Economics, will moderate a panel discussion.

The panel will include Goldin and Katz, as well as Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladóttir, former director of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, former foreign minister and former mayor; Sonja Ýr Þorbergsdóttir, a lawyer and chair of the BSRB trade union federation; and Gylfi Zoëga, a professor of economics at the University of Iceland.
