Earthquake swarm strikes Reykjanes Ridge, largest magnitude 4.1

An earthquake swarm has been ongoing on the Reykjanes Ridge since shortly after 3:30 a.m., with the largest tremor measuring 4.1, mbl.is reports.

About 100 earthquakes have been recorded since then, many measuring around 3 or higher. The earthquakes have occurred in bursts and the swarm is still continuing, according to Sigríður Magnea Óskarsdóttir, a natural hazard specialist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office.

She said there was no indication that the swarm was a precursor to anything more significant. Earthquake swarms are common in the area, where continuous plate movements occur along the Atlantic Ridge.

The earthquakes have not been felt in populated areas. Their sources are located about 30 kilometres west of Eldey.
