Culture Night, fireworks, reykjavik

Reykjavik Culture Night was reaching its peak in the city centre on Saturday, with hundreds of events taking place before a fireworks display ends the formal programme at 10pm, mbl.is reported.

More than 400 events have been scheduled for this year’s festival, which also marks Reykjavik’s 240th anniversary. Large crowds have gathered in the city centre.

Music at Arnarhóll

Rás 2’s Tónaflóð concert began at Arnarhóll at 7pm and will continue until the fireworks. The programme features a wide range of Icelandic musicians, including Jói Pé and Króli with special guests, Árný Margrét, Spacestation and Daði Freyr.

Páll Óskar and Benni Hemm Hemm will close the concert before the fireworks begin.

Bylgjan marks 40 years

Bylgjan is also celebrating its 40th anniversary with a major concert in Hljómskálagarðurinn park. Performers include Birgitta Haukdal, Friðrik Dór, Stefán Hilmarsson, Kristmundur Axel, Erna Hrönn, Á móti sól and FM95BLÖ.

The concert began at 6pm and will continue into the evening.

Entertainment will continue elsewhere in the city centre. DJ Margeir’s MOMENT block party is taking place on Klapparstígur, while bars and concert venues are hosting performances and other events late into the evening.

Fireworks at 10pm

The traditional Culture Night fireworks display will begin at 10pm, marking the end of the festival’s formal programme.

Parts of the city centre have been closed to vehicle traffic for the celebrations. General street closures will remain in place until midnight.
