Reykjavík’s Menningarnótt cultural festival was officially opened at 12:30 on Saturday, with Mayor Hildur Björnsdóttir launching the event and guests offered birthday cake marking the city’s 240th anniversary, mbl.is reports.
Police said they had successfully managed the large crowds in central Reykjavík so far. The Reykjavík Marathon also drew a strong atmosphere despite heavy rain.
Police will increase their presence in the city centre as the day progresses. Large crowds are expected there in the evening, which may cause traffic delays.
Largest Culture Night so far
This year’s programme includes dance performances, a fashion show on Ingólfsstræti, a Skrans skateboarding event, outdoor karaoke at Steinbryggjan and an exhibition at the Reykjavík Art Museum.
Music is also central to the festival. Larger events include Tónaflóð at Arnarhóll, featuring Daði Freyr, Páll Óskar, JóiPé and Króli, Árný Margrét and other artists.
The Reykjavík Forestry Association is the festival’s guest of honour, marking its 125th anniversary. Activities at Reykjavík City Hall include a scent shower, wood carving and a photography exhibition.
Menningarnótt will end with a fireworks display at 22:00. The city is encouraging visitors to walk, cycle or use public transport, as vehicle access will be closed in several parts of the city centre.
Large crowds attended the opening ceremony despite the weather, and the rain did not appear to dampen the atmosphere in central Reykjavík.
