Authorities investigate explosion linked to Swedish nationals in Copenhagen’s Østerbro neighborhood
Authorities in Copenhagen are investigating a recent explosion at a kiosk in the Østerbro neighborhood, which may be linked to ongoing criminal activities involving Swedish nationals. Andreas Emil Christensen, a special prosecutor with the Copenhagen Police, indicated that the case resembles several others in a troubling pattern.
Late last night, Swedish police detained two individuals—a 24-year-old man and woman—near the Danish-Swedish border. Both are Swedish citizens charged with possessing a hand grenade, causing the kiosk explosion, and attempted murder. Christensen noted that there were people inside and outside the kiosk who may have been in life-threatening danger at the time of the blast.
Today, the suspects were remanded in custody in absentia during a preliminary hearing. The Copenhagen Police have requested their extradition to Denmark, a process that Christensen estimates could take from a few days to several weeks.
These arrests add to a growing list of incidents involving young Swedes involved in criminal activities in Denmark. Since August 1, five Swedish nationals have been charged with various crimes. For instance, a 17-year-old Swedish boy was taken into custody yesterday for attempted murder and possession of a weapon, linked to a shooting at a jewelry store in Frederiksberg.
Christensen expressed concern over the situation, suggesting that Danish criminals have begun hiring young Swedish individuals to carry out violent crimes on their behalf, a trend recognized by law enforcement officials.
