Construction of a new treatment centre at Landspítali hospital is expected to be largely completed by the end of 2029, mbl.is reported. A transition period will then begin so the hospital can start operating with new equipment and technology.

Almost all external work on the treatment centre has been completed. Interior work began more than a year ago in the basement and on the inpatient wards on the building’s two highest floors, according to a statement on the New Landspítali website.

Planning is already under way for the move, with assistance from foreign specialists. Work on the interior finishing and equipment installation at the research building is expected to be completed before the treatment centre.

The Hringbraut project includes the treatment centre, a research building, a car park and technical building, an underground car park, and various utility systems. It also covers road, ground and utility works. A hospital hotel included in the project opened in 2019.

The development of Landspítali is described as one of the largest infrastructure projects carried out in Iceland. The total investment is spread across a construction period running from 2010 to 2031 and is fully funded under Parliament’s current financial plan.

The board of New Landspítali ohf and a steering group overseeing construction planning for Landspítali and other specialised hospitals have presented an updated overall plan to the health minister and the minister of finance and economic affairs.

Projects outside Hringbraut

Plans have also been prepared for specialised hospital buildings outside Hringbraut. A new rehabilitation facility operated by Landspítali at Grensás is due to be completed at the beginning of 2027.

A new building for inpatient, day and outpatient departments at Akureyri Hospital is scheduled for completion in 2031. Work has also been carried out to expand the emergency department’s assessment unit in Fossvogur, with completion expected before autumn 2026.
