Faroese politicians Eirikur í Jákupsstovu and Fróði Magnussen say the political system should examine moving trawlers in group 2 and large longline vessels in group 3 from the fishing-days system to a quota system, Kringvarp Føroya reported.

Í Jákupsstovu, a Tjóðveldi member of the Løgting and former minister for fisheries, and Magnussen, a People’s Party member of the Løgting, discussed the organisation of the fishing industry in Faroese waters on KVF’s Breddin programme.

The discussion came after the Shipowners’ Association indicated that it wanted quotas instead of fishing days.

Fisheries Minister Bárður á Steig Nielsen said at the Fisheries Parliament in Klaksvík on Monday that he did not believe there was support within the coalition for a quota system.
