Turku Court of Appeal has significantly increased the sentence of a man convicted in a stabbing at Tampere Central Square, Yle reports.

The court sentenced 67-year-old Ukrainian national Albert Mkrtchian to eight and a half years in prison for attempted murder, aggravated assault and breaching a restraining order.

Pirkanmaa District Court had sentenced him to five and a half years last November for attempted manslaughter.

The stabbing took place on August 9, 2025. The victims were a woman and a man. The woman was Mkrtchian’s former spouse, while the man was her new partner and had gone to defend her.

The woman suffered more serious injuries than the man, but her injuries were not life-threatening.
