Sustainability in fisheries and whether to replace the fishing-days system with quotas were the focus of a KVF radio debate between Fróði Magnussen of the People’s Party and Eirik í Jákupsstovu of the Republic party.
Sustainability was one of the main topics at the international fisheries conference IIFET, held at the Nordic House this week, KVF reported.
The issue has also drawn attention in recent months, after people in the fishing industry became concerned that MSC approval could be lost because it depends on fisheries being managed sustainably.
A fisheries panel was also held during Seamen’s Days in Klaksvík this week. The discussion considered whether the fishing-days system should be replaced with a quota system.
Under the current question, fishing rights would either cover a specified number of days or a specified quantity of fish.
