As the fulmar hunting season approaches, little is known about the size of the population or the pressure from hunting, Kringvarp Føroya reports.

Jóhannis Danielsen, an ornithologist at the Faroese Marine Research Institute, said the situation required more knowledge about the stock and hunting pressure.

The European fulmar population declined sharply for several years and was added to the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s red list.

The Faroese population is considered vulnerable.
