A small glacial flood appears to have begun in the Múlakvísl river, mbl.is reports, citing the Icelandic Met Office. Electrical conductivity in the river has risen steadily over the past 24 hours.

The river’s surface has not yet risen in line with the increase in conductivity, but the Icelandic Met Office said that could happen over the coming days. Floods of this size are well known in Múlakvísl, which flows from beneath the Mýrdalsjökull glacier.

The flood is accompanied by high levels of gas pollution. The Icelandic Met Office said hydrogen sulphide measured overnight at a monitoring station in Láguhvola, about two kilometres from the edge of the Katla glacier, exceeded health protection limits.

People are advised not to stay near the river or its source by the glacier. Calm weather in recent days has also increased the risk of gas accumulating in depressions. Anyone experiencing symptoms such as irritation in the nose or eyes should leave the area immediately.

The Icelandic Met Office is continuing to monitor conditions around the clock and will issue further information if they change.
