Man dies after police use stun gun in Espoo
A man died in hospital after police used a stun gun during an incident in Espoo on Friday night, Yle reports. The man’s close relatives told Yle that he had an intellectual disability and lived in a residential unit for people with intellectual disabilities.
The Western Uusimaa Police Department said on Tuesday that officers used a stun gun during a police assignment on August 14. According to police, the man behaved aggressively towards people at the scene.
Police said the man was injured in the incident and was taken to hospital by emergency medical services. He later died there.
Yle interviewed three of the man’s close relatives. They said he was about 50 years old and had suffered serious physical injuries during the incident. The relatives said they did not yet have more detailed information about what happened.
The police crimes unit of the Office of the Prosecutor General is assessing whether a preliminary investigation into the police action should be opened, police said.
The residential unit did not comment to Yle on Tuesday.
