Kringvarp Føroya reports that a growing number of people are seeking collars that deliver electric shocks when dogs bark. Veterinarian Kristina Dahl Joensen strongly advises against using them, saying they represent poor animal welfare.
“It is equivalent to punishing children by shaking or hitting them,” Joensen said.
Demand for the collars remains high. Grækaris Fernandez Heinesen, a salesperson at Djórahandilin and Akvariubúðin, said the shop is asked about them several times a week. The demand has prompted the shop to post on social media to make clear that it does not sell shock collars.
Other types of collars, including spray collars, are also available on the market.
Shock collars for dogs are banned by law in Denmark, but Faroese legislation does not directly prohibit them.
