The recent incident at Litla-Hraun prison, where a prisoner unexpectedly attacked a guard on Friday, has raised concerns in the facility. Three guards were injured during the altercation, with two suffering minor injuries and one sustaining a head wound that required stitches. Fortunately, all were discharged from the hospital the same day.

Páll Winkel, the director of the prison, emphasized that the facility remains under control despite this violent episode. He noted that actions would be taken against individuals involved in threats or violence, including disciplinary warnings. Measures are also in place to isolate dangerous prisoners.

Winkel acknowledged that violent incidents are not new to Litla-Hraun, but he has noticed a shift in behavior among some inmates. He mentioned that there are individuals exhibiting erratic behavior unrelated to substance abuse, making it challenging to anticipate violent actions.

As violence has increased, Winkel stated that the prison is taking necessary steps to enhance safety. However, he admitted that maintaining safety standards at Litla-Hraun will be difficult in the long term until a new, more secure facility is set to open in 2028. Until then, ensuring adequate staffing and ongoing training for guards is critical.

Guards at the prison have expressed a need for improved training and more personnel on duty. Heiðar Smith, head of the Icelandic Guard Union, highlighted the importance of equipping guards with skills for managing difficult situations more effectively.

Despite the rising incidents of violence, Páll Winkel reassured that the prison is well-managed, with experienced staff capable of handling challenges as they arise.
