Search and rescue operations for two foreign tourists trapped in a cave in Kerlingarfjöll, Iceland, have been ongoing since the previous evening. Approximately 100 rescue personnel are engaged in extensive search efforts. The tourists requested assistance from emergency services, stating they had become trapped, but the only information available to rescuers is the location from which the distress signal was sent.
Recent updates clarify that a rental car found at the campsite does not belong to the missing tourists. As rescue efforts continue, a rotation of rescue teams is taking place to bring in fresh personnel.
Authorities have also begun reviewing surveillance camera footage from the area to gather more information. The rental car at the campsite could potentially belong to the tourists, but this has not yet been confirmed. Additional resources, including search dogs, have been deployed to assist in finding the missing individuals.
The search has intensified, with teams from various regions of the country being summoned, except for those from Snæfellsnes, the Westfjords, Eastfjords, and the Westman Islands. As of now, there are no leads on their exact whereabouts, and the situation is concerning as the rescue teams have not been able to communicate with the tourists since they made their distress call. A helicopter is on standby should aerial assistance be required.
