Search and Rescue Efforts Continue for Missing Tourists in Kerlingarfjöll

Search operations are ongoing to locate two tourists who went missing after being trapped in a cave due to a rockfall at Kerlingarfjöll on the evening of August 5. The individuals reached out for help via an online chat with the emergency services.

Rescue teams have been active throughout the night, but so far, efforts have not yielded results. More than 130 rescue personnel have been involved, alongside others, bringing the total number of participants to around 160. There have been few leads regarding the tourists’ whereabouts, and no further details about them have been released. The search is currently focusing on crevices near the location of the incident.

Visibility during the night was reported to be poor, with overcast skies and rain, but conditions have improved this morning. Officials from Landsbjörg noted that the teams are systematically searching all known caves in the area, operating under the assumption that the individuals remain inside due to the rockfall blocking their exit.

Despite attempts to re-establish contact with the tourists, efforts have been unsuccessful since their initial communication. The search continues with teams hunting thoroughly around the area from which the alert originated.

The weather has been challenging for search efforts, but as daylight returns, a helicopter is expected to assist in the ongoing operation to locate the missing tourists.
