Swedish government parties appoint commission to review state spending

Sweden’s governing parties and the Sweden Democrats will launch an inquiry to improve efficiency in state operations, SVT reports. The initiative was presented on Friday as a “waste commission” and is intended to ensure that public funds are used carefully.

Efficiency, public benefit and simplification are the stated priorities. The government and the Sweden Democrats say they want to secure increased defence spending, manage state funds cautiously and ensure that the state does not collect more tax than necessary.

“We should not collect more tax than is required, and that tax should be used in the best possible way. We will systematically review this spending and assess what the state should do more or less of,” Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson said.

Åke Nordlander, director general of the Export Credit Board, has been appointed special investigator. The inquiry must submit an interim report by March 12, 2027, and a final report by January 21, 2028.
