In Vantaa, Finland, the stabbings that occurred earlier this year at the Koivukylä shopping center stemmed from a dispute among young people that began on social media, according to investigation leader and crime commissioner Marko Särkkä.

Police had previously sought information regarding the incidents from early February, during which two individuals under 18 were stabbed. Although the victims sustained serious injuries, Särkkä reported that they were soon discharged from the hospital and are either recovering or in the process of recovery.

Särkkä indicated that the altercation involved dozens of youths, some minors and some adults. “The discussion on social media escalated to a confrontation, which resulted in a fight during which two individuals were stabbed,” he explained.

There is no suspicion of gang involvement in this case. “This reflects what one might describe as modern behaviors among young men—social media played a significant role,” Särkkä noted.

The stabbings are being investigated as attempted murder cases. While one stabbing remains under investigation by the police, a suspect over 15 years of age has been identified in connection with the other incident. Additionally, there are charges of aggravated assault, participation in a brawl, and several lesser offenses involved in the case. According to Särkkä, there are “numerous suspects” related to the lesser charges.
