Wildfires intensify concern for firefighting services in northern Finland

Wildfires are now a daily concern for firefighting services in northern Finland. On Monday, two new wildfires ignited in the Inari Lake archipelago, according to Lapin Kansa. In the morning, a fire brigade boat extinguished a small fire on Jääsaari Island, believed to have originated from an unextinguished campfire. Later that evening, another fire broke out on Koirasaari Island. The causes of the fires remain uncertain.

In recent weeks, multiple wildfires have occurred across Inari’s islands. Jonne Siivikko, leader of the Ivalo volunteer fire department, stated that their current resources are insufficient for firefighting efforts. Addressing fires on islands is challenging and time-consuming, and expenses can escalate if helicopters are involved. “Our hoses have often burned through, and we’ve had multiple pump failures. Firefighting efforts take us away from other work,” Siivikko noted.

A fire warning has been issued for the municipalities of Inari and Utsjoki. The fire department emphasizes that lighting open flames is strictly prohibited during this warning period. “It doesn’t matter if the person is a local or a tourist; the ban is absolute,” Siivikko pointed out.

Occasionally, sailors passing by have joined in the firefighting efforts, and the Ivalo volunteer fire department expresses gratitude for all assistance received. Siivikko encourages everyone to help as much as they can if they encounter a wildfire, stating that even small efforts can prevent a fire from spreading. “The rescue law mandates participation in a way that suits individuals best, without putting themselves in danger,” he emphasized.
