The extensive renovation of Kuopio Airport is now complete. Finavia, the airport operator, revitalized the runway, taxiways, and other technical infrastructure during the summer. According to Mari Nurminen, the regional director for Central and Eastern Finland, the project adhered to both its original budget and timeline, costing nearly €20 million.
The renovation involved resurfacing the runway and overlaying the previously widened taxiways. Additionally, the approach lighting system located in Juurusvesi, along with its supporting structures, was upgraded. The airport’s lighting and electrical systems were also modernized, replacing older fixtures with more energy-efficient LED lights. Over the past three consecutive summers, Finavia has improved the airport area, laying a total of 12.5 kilometers of new optical cables underground during the renovations.
In summer 2024, the airport’s stormwater drainage system will also receive upgrades to enhance water management and reduce the environmental impact of airport operations. Due to the renovation, flight operations at the airport have been suspended since June 24 and are set to resume on August 6.
The renovation also affected the Karjalan Air Force, which is based at Rissala. The fleet’s Hornet fighters were temporarily relocated to other airfields. Colonel Johan Anttila, the commander of the Karjalan Air Force, stated that the Hornets will return in the coming days, although he did not disclose specific timing. He expressed satisfaction with the completion of the airport renovations, which will secure operations for years to come. The upgrades also aim to adhere to NATO requirements, though they primarily align with routine maintenance schedules, which typically recommend resurfacing every five to ten years to minimize operational risks.
