German tourist arrested after driving 183 km/h in 60 zone

A German tourist was measured driving at 183 kilometres per hour in a 60 km/h zone in Vestvågøy on Wednesday evening, NRK reported. The driver fled from police before stopping after becoming stuck in a queue of cars.

The Swedish-registered rental car also carried the driver’s mother as a passenger. Geir Martinsen, district manager of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration’s emergency response police in northern Norway, described the speed as “horrific”.

After police took control of the driver, he was taken to a doctor for a blood test on suspicion of driving under the influence. The man was arrested and placed in custody in Svolvær with help from local police. Nordland Police District and local prosecutors are handling the case.
