Events are being held across the Reykjavík capital region as a total solar eclipse begins at around 5:47 p.m. on Wednesday, mbl.is reports. Totality will last for just over a minute, while the eclipse will continue for about two hours.
The eclipse will begin as a partial eclipse before becoming total. The list of events compiled by mbl.is is not exhaustive.
Festival in Hafnarfjörður
Björk and record label Smekkleysa are holding a solar eclipse festival at Víðistaðatún in Hafnarfjörður. The programme includes DJ sets by Björk and Arca, as well as performances by Ronja and Sideproject.
Gatherings across the region
A meeting point for residents of Mosfellsbær will be set up at Tungubakkar. It will feature giant solar eclipse glasses and a musical performance by Hafdís Huld, the municipality’s artist of the year.
UMFA will organise a family challenge and operate a snack stand, while Bæjarins bestu will sell hot dogs. Part of the proceeds will go to UMFA.
The beach at Álftanes is expected to be one of the better places in the capital region to watch the total eclipse. Portable toilets have been installed, food will be available for purchase and a rescue team will provide security in the area.
On Seltjarnarnes, the total eclipse will last the longest in the capital region. People will be able to gather at the golf course and at Ráðagerði by the Grótta lighthouse.
The golf clubhouse will be open and the restaurant will offer special deals. Food will also be sold outdoors. Indoor seating at Ráðagerði is fully booked, but party tents have been set up over the outdoor tables, and space will also be available in a garden pavilion by the building.
