Search and Rescue Efforts Continue for Missing Tourists

Rescue operations are ongoing for two tourists who became trapped in a cave following a rockslide near Kerlingafjöll on the evening of August 5, 2024. Efforts to locate the individuals endured throughout the night, but unfortunately, they have not yet been found.

Visibility conditions during the search have been poor, characterized by low cloud cover and rain, but dawn has begun to break over the area. Teams are currently conducting searches in all known caves, operating under the assumption that the missing persons are still inside the cave.

A total of 135 search personnel are currently deployed, with 150 having participated in the operation since it began. A helicopter from the Coast Guard had to withdraw due to visibility issues but is expected to rejoin the search later this morning.

According to a spokesperson for the rescue organization, search efforts commenced from the last known location of the emergency call, but despite extensive searches, no further information has been uncovered.

The situation remains critical as rescue teams continue their tireless efforts to locate the missing tourists.
