Welfare committee weighs aid for households hit by high energy prices

Faroese lawmakers are considering a proposal to help financially strained households affected by high energy prices, KVF reports.

The Parliament’s welfare committee is examining a proposal from the Republican Party and the Self-Government Party to increase the energy allowance and raise the income and asset thresholds in the family allowance law.

The proposal aims to provide support this year and adjust the thresholds so they can follow future changes in income and prices.

Several organisations and interest groups, as well as two government ministers, met with the welfare committee on Tuesday.

Committee chairman Grímur Sundstein would not say whether the governing coalition would support the proposal. He said, however, that to his knowledge the government is not working on a similar proposal.

KVF has asked Finance Minister Aksel V. Johannesen for comment, but he has not responded.
