Judge releases man shot by police

A judge at Frederiksberg District Court has released a 22-year-old man who was shot by police in Tingbjerg, Copenhagen, over the weekend, DR reports. His defence lawyer, Martin Due Lomholdt, said the man had initially been remanded in custody.

The man was unable to appear in court over the weekend. A judge at Copenhagen City Court then decided, based on the preliminary material from police, that there were sufficient grounds to remand him in custody in absentia.

At Tuesday’s hearing at Frederiksberg District Court, which had taken over the case, Lomholdt presented video footage that had not been shown at the first hearing. The footage shows the shooting from another angle, and the lawyer said the judge gave particular weight to it. The 22-year-old’s account, which he gave at Tuesday’s hearing, was also considered.

The footage appears to show the police officer firing at the car in which the man was sitting as it was moving away from the officer.

The Independent Police Complaints Authority is investigating whether there are grounds for criminal proceedings against the police officers involved. The prosecution chose not to appeal the court’s decision to the Eastern High Court, according to Lomholdt.
