Police correct ambulance account in Tuusula moped crash

Police have corrected their account of a weekend crash in Tuusula, saying no ambulance was called to the scene where an officer forced a young moped rider off the road, Yle reports.

The 15-year-old rider was instead taken in a police car to another location, where emergency medical personnel examined him.

“The examination did not take place exactly at the scene. He was transported to another location, where paramedics examined him,” said Juha Åkerman, the Helsinki Police Department’s lead investigator.

Åkerman said he could not explain why an ambulance was not called to the scene.

According to the police, the moped had been modified to travel well above the legal limit of 45 kilometres per hour. It was therefore classified under the law as a light motorcycle.

The rider is suspected of aggravated endangerment of traffic safety, driving a vehicle without authorisation and a vehicle offence. Investigators are now collecting technical evidence, and the suspect will be questioned in the coming weeks, Åkerman said.

The prosecutor suspects the police officer who forced the rider off the road of breach of official duty, aggravated endangerment of traffic safety and causing injury.
