Moped rider forced off road by police suffered multiple fractures

Yle reports that a 15-year-old moped rider forced off the road by police on Saturday evening suffered a fractured foot. The rider also told Helsingin Sanomat that five bones in his hand were broken.

The rider has also described the fractures on TikTok. According to information obtained by Helsingin Sanomat, he is due to undergo surgery this week and is not in life-threatening condition.

The incident occurred on Palkkitie in Tuusula, where a police car forced the moped into a ditch and against a fence.

The incident followed a pursuit in which a police patrol tried to stop a two-wheeled vehicle. Police said the vehicle had no registration plate and that its driver tried to escape.

Both the young rider and the police officer involved are suspected of crimes. The rider is preliminarily suspected of aggravated endangerment of traffic safety, driving a vehicle without a licence and a vehicle offence.

The officer is suspected of breaching official duties, aggravated endangerment of traffic safety and causing bodily injury. The officer has been transferred to other duties for the duration of the investigation, according to Seppo Kujala, deputy police chief at the East Uusimaa Police Department.
