Search launched for missing pleasure boat with two aboard

Search and rescue teams have been called out after a pleasure boat with two people aboard failed to make contact, mbl.is reports. Teams in Faxaflói and Akranes have joined the search, while other boats in the area have also been asked to look for it.

Ásgeir Erlendsson, a spokesperson for the Icelandic Coast Guard, said the boat reported leaving port at around 10am on Monday. The Coast Guard had information that two people were aboard.

Pleasure boats are not required to carry automatic tracking systems, but crews normally report their status every hour. The Coast Guard control centre contacted the boat after receiving no updates, but was unable to reach the crew.

The Coast Guard aircraft TF SIF was diverted from a surveillance flight to search for the boat. The search was unsuccessful, after which rescue teams in Faxaflói and Akranes were called out.
