Rescuers carry injured tourist from gorge below Háafoss

Rescue teams carried an injured tourist from a gorge below Háafoss waterfall overnight, mbl.is reported. The man had been travelling alone and injured his foot in an area without mobile phone coverage.

Another group of tourists found him and called for help. It was not immediately known how long he had been injured before he was found.

All rescue teams in Árnessýsla were called out at around 9pm on Sunday, and a Coast Guard helicopter crew was sent to the scene. Rescuers quickly determined that the man would have to be moved out of the gorge before he could be lifted into the helicopter.

About 20 rescuers from Árnessýsla reached the man at around 12.30am. He was carried on a stretcher to an ambulance, completing the rescue operation at around 2am, and was then taken for medical care.

The rescue teams also helped bring the man’s car back to an inhabited area.
