Finnish citizen detained near Vainikkala border fence

Yle reported that the Southeast Finland Border Guard prevented a Finnish citizen from crossing illegally from Finland into Russia near Vainikkala early on Monday.

The person was detained in terrain immediately next to the eastern border barrier after an alert from a surveillance system. Vainikkala is part of the city of Lappeenranta.

The Southeast Finland Border Guard is investigating the incident and has contacted the border commissioner for the Vyborg region.

Movement in the border zone requires a permit. Moving or staying there without permission is punishable.
