Government moves to abolish state pharmacist post

Kringvarp Føroya reports that a proposal to abolish the state pharmacist post is heading back to the Faroese parliament.
The proposal was first introduced in February but fell when the election was called. The Ministry of Health and Energy has now sent the bill out for consultation again after making several changes.
The state pharmacist’s official duties would be transferred to the pharmacy service and the Health Authority. The proposal is based on recommendations in the 2021 plan for the public health authority, which said that the transfer of the pharmacist’s supervisory duties to the Health Authority and operational duties to the pharmacy service should begin in 2026.
A director would also be appointed to lead the pharmacy service.
The ministry says the proposal would remove the existing structural conflict of interest and support more impartial enforcement of legislation governing pharmacies and medicines.
The law is scheduled to take effect on 1 January next year.
