Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) has decided to withdraw its presence from the social media platform X. One of the main reasons cited is the increasingly harsh tone on the platform, making it difficult to moderate discussions. Nina Palesa Bonde, a jurist and commentator, argues that this decision undermines DR’s responsibility to its audience.
She emphasizes that content shared on X backed by established media like DR and TV2 carries more weight due to adherence to journalistic ethics and fact-checking. Bonde expresses concern that DR’s departure means that credible sources and experts will be left isolated on X. Recent research from the Institute for Human Rights indicates that 31% of Danes have refrained from participating in public debates on social media over the past year, citing the toxic environment as a key reason. Bonde adds that by leaving X, DR also forfeits the chance to help modulate the public discourse.
Anders Emil Møller, the leading editorial manager at DR News, acknowledges that the decision involves several considerations. He points out that while DR is dedicated to responsible publishing and invests significantly in managing its content, it cannot take responsibility for shared content on social media without effective moderation tools. Møller believes that X’s current moderation capabilities and level of transparency are insufficient for fostering a constructive communication environment.
