Early road milling causes delays in south Iceland

Traffic delays have been reported on the South Coast Road east of Þingborg community hall after contractors began milling the road about 12 hours earlier than planned, mbl.is reports.

G. Pétur Matthíasson, an information officer at Iceland’s Road and Coastal Administration, confirmed the delay to mbl.is. He said the contractors started early to take advantage of the weather, which had been poor recently.

Road milling was originally scheduled to begin on Monday morning. Traffic is being directed through the work zone, with vehicles travelling in opposite directions allowed through alternately. There is no detour available in the area.

The work is expected to continue on Monday and probably Tuesday. Contractors have been asked to slow down at intervals and allow traffic through more frequently.

G. Pétur said he could not confirm how many vehicles had been caught in the delays. However, mbl.is received a report that many cars were stuck in westbound traffic earlier in the evening and that some drivers had turned around to avoid the congestion.
