Fire closes Bónus store in Egilsstaðir

A fire broke out at a Bónus supermarket in Egilsstaðir on Saturday morning, leaving the store closed, mbl.is reports.

Bónus managing director Björgvin Víkingsson said the fire started in a cooling fan inside the milk cooler.

No one was injured. The store had not yet opened for the day, so there were no customers inside, although employees were at work and tried to put out the fire with an extinguisher before firefighters arrived.

“Fortunately, no one was harmed, which is the most important thing, but it could not have been burning for long. The fire brigade arrived within five to eight minutes and quickly brought it under control,” Björgvin told mbl.is.

The cooling room sustained considerable damage from smoke and soot. Björgvin said the fire was brought under control shortly after firefighters arrived, and praised their quick response.

It is not yet known when the store will reopen, although it is likely to be within the next few days. “We are working to open as soon as possible. As things stand, we are taking it one day at a time,” Björgvin said.
