Bergen could record wettest day of the year

Bergen could record its wettest day of the year on Sunday, with 46.3 millimetres of rain registered since midnight, Dagbladet reports. The rainfall could surpass Saturday’s record, according to the Norwegian Meteorological Institute.

“Saturday was the wettest day so far, but forecasts up to 11 a.m. indicate that Sunday could become the wettest day of the year,” meteorologist Ingrid Opheim Bækkelund told NTB.

Western Norway is being hit hardest by the rain. Meteorologists have issued yellow warnings for rain, flooding and landslides in parts of the region.

“The rain will simply continue. Be aware that there will be surface water on the roads and local flooding,” Bækkelund warned.

A landslide has occurred in a residential area in Midttun, Bergen. Police said the slide went between two houses and is partly resting against a detached house.

A smaller mudslide has also occurred below a house in Mjølkeråen, Bergen. The resident has chosen to evacuate while awaiting an assessment by a geologist.

No injuries have been reported in connection with the landslides. Emergency services and geologists are working at the locations to secure the areas.

Western Norway will have a grey Monday with rain showers, although there may be some dry periods between the showers. The rain is expected to ease during Tuesday, when sunshine could return.

Showery weather will affect areas as far north as Nordland, while northern Norway will have showers alternating with dry periods. Eastern and southern Norway are expected to have the best weather in the coming days.
