Children collect deposit bottles to fund Formula 1 dream

Six-year-old Jamie Lyngsø and four-year-old Shelby Lyngsø are collecting empty cans and bottles to raise the 15,000 kroner their family needs to attend a Formula 1 race next summer, DR reports.

The siblings from Odense are passionate fans of driver Lewis Hamilton. With their parents, they recently drove to a bottle-return station with a car full of collected containers.

For the past few weeks, the family has asked for donations of deposit-return bottles and cans on Facebook and Instagram. Jamie and Shelby also collect them in their daily lives and at summer events across Funen.

“It is a family project that we have started together, and it is very important to me that our children understand that they also have to earn the money themselves,” their mother, Marie Louise Lyngsø, said.

The family has already saved 5,000 kroner, mainly through collecting bottles and cans. They also plan to hold a cake sale, which Lyngsø said would give the children another way to take part.

When Grøn Koncert came to Odense, the children collected deposit containers and sold drinks and snacks. Their home is decorated with banners, Lego Formula 1 cars, collector cards and drawings of Formula 1 cars.

“It would be enormous for all of us to experience it as a family, especially after working so hard for it,” Lyngsø said.
