Maren Sømme laid to rest after suspected murder

Maren Sømme, 30, was laid to rest in Stavanger on Friday, as friends and family gathered for a final farewell, Dagbladet reported. A man in his 30s has been charged with her murder and denies criminal guilt.

Sømme was found severely injured at a private address in Jæren on Sunday, July 26. She died in hospital the following day from her injuries.

Her funeral took place at Tjensvoll Chapel at 1pm. Her white coffin stood at the centre of the altar, surrounded by red roses, candles and messages of remembrance.

“Rest in peace. We already miss you,” read the ribbon hanging from the coffin.

The man charged with murder has said that Sømme fell down a staircase. He had already been charged with violence against her after an incident a week before her death.

“Both the victim and the suspect were questioned in that case. The case was under investigation when the new incident occurred,” police prosecutor Fredrik Martin Soma previously told VG.

The man charged and Sømme were reportedly in a relationship.

In an earlier statement to Dagbladet, Sømme’s family described her as a caring woman and a beloved family member.

“Unfortunately, she came into contact with the wrong man. We are deeply shocked by the brutal way she died and that she did not receive help until it was too late. She will be greatly missed,” the family said.
