High summer ends in western and northern Norway as rain takes over

For parts of western Norway and northern Norway, the warmest summer days of the year are probably over, Dagbladet reports. Repeated low-pressure systems are expected to bring rain and temperatures around 20 degrees in the coming weeks.

“It looks as though high summer is over in western Norway and northern Norway,” state meteorologist Sigrid Marie Vildskog Auganæs told Dagbladet.

Norway defines a high-summer day as one with a maximum temperature of at least 25 degrees. A Nordic summer day requires temperatures of 20 degrees or more.

“In the west and north, Nordic summer days are still possible, especially the farther south you go,” Auganæs said.

Western Norway and northern Norway experienced a wet and cool July, and similar conditions are expected to continue in the coming weeks. The weather is linked to a boundary between warm air from the south and cold air from the north, creating persistent low pressure over parts of the country.

“There will not be powerful autumn storms, but low-pressure systems will keep moving towards western Norway, one after another. Overall, it will be rain, rain and more rain,” Auganæs said.

Some places in northern Norway may see longer breaks from the rain, while Nordic summer days could still occur in places. “You have to enjoy the fine weather when you can,” the meteorologist said.

Southern Norway is not expected to experience the same repeated low-pressure weather. The rain and falling temperatures at the start of August are likely to be temporary, with sunshine expected to return towards the weekend and into next week.

Temperatures could reach 25 degrees in several places next weekend. According to the long-range forecasts, temperatures may then remain around 23 degrees through August.

At the same time, parts of Europe are experiencing a severe heatwave. Temperatures have reached around 35 degrees in parts of Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Austria.

Austria recorded 41.2 degrees on Wednesday in the village of Bad Deutsch-Altenburg, the highest temperature ever recorded in the country. Slovakia recorded an even higher temperature, with 41.4 degrees measured on Wednesday in the village of Kamenica nad Hronom in the southwest of the country.
