Police warn Faroes are not immune to online radicalisation

The Faroe Islands face a very low terrorist threat but are not immune to young people being radicalised online and drawn into serious crimes, Kári Jacobsen, head of the investigations department at the Faroese Police, told KVF.

Jacobsen was speaking after three boys in Denmark, two aged 16 and one aged 15, were charged with planning a terrorist attack on a school in Jutland.

Young people are particularly vulnerable to influence, he said, making it important to be aware of the online environments in which they participate.

The Danish case shows how social media and online groups can be used to encourage young people to carry out extremist acts, Jacobsen said.

He stressed that the overall threat to the Faroe Islands remains very low, although Faroese young people can access the same digital environments as young people elsewhere.
