death, Kalvåg, police investigation

A man in his 50s has been arrested and suspected of leaving another man in a helpless condition after a fatal fall in Kalvåg, Dagbladet reports.

A man in his 30s was found unconscious early Sunday below a cliff more than 10 metres high. First responders administered life-saving treatment, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police initially investigated the incident as an accident. They told Dagbladet on Sunday that it appeared to have been a tragic accident on the way home from a party.

Information gathered during the investigation led police to summon the man in his 50s for a witness interview on Sunday. They later arrested him and formally suspected him of leaving the deceased in a helpless condition.

Police in the Western Police District said they were working on several hypotheses. They will conduct further witness interviews, examine mobile phones and check for possible surveillance footage from the area. The suspect is due to be questioned again on Monday evening.

His lawyer, Paul-Inge Angelshaug, said it was too early to comment on how his client viewed the suspicion. He confirmed that the man would explain himself to police later on Monday.

The deceased had attended a public event at Knutholmen, police prosecutor Farzad Izadi told Dagbladet. Police are investigating his movements after he left the event but would not say whether he was heading home or elsewhere.

Friends reported him missing during the night after failing to find him at home following the party. They began searching and eventually called police. The group found him below the cliff before officers arrived.

There were no witnesses to the fall. Police spoke to the friends who found him and carried out examinations at the scene. An autopsy is planned.
