Biogas production in Denmark covered 99.7 percent of gas consumption in July, marking the first month in which production and consumption reached almost the same level, according to industry organisation Biogas Danmark, citing data from Energinet.

“This historic result shows that Denmark is a leading biogas country and that within a few years we can become completely self sufficient in green, carbon neutral gas,” Søren Pind, chair of Biogas Danmark, said in a press release.

July also set records for the highest monthly share of biogas, the highest monthly production, the highest share of biogas on a single day and the highest daily production, Biogas Danmark said.

Gas consumption also increased during the month.

Denmark has around 150 biogas plants, producing biogas for uses including electricity generation. According to the Danish Energy Agency, livestock manure is the primary material used in production.

The agency expects gas consumption to be supplied entirely by biogas by 2030.
