Safety authority investigates fatal powerboat race collision in Kotka

Finland’s Safety Investigation Authority is investigating a collision in a powerboat race in Kotka that killed one of the participants, Yle reports.

Two boats collided on Saturday just before a turn marked by a buoy. The driver of the boat travelling ahead died in the crash.

The investigation will establish what happened. The authority does not determine guilt, liability or compensation, but may issue recommendations to help prevent similar accidents.

The Southeast Finland Police are also investigating the incident. Police said the boat in front turned, or veered, sharply towards the direction of the turn before reaching the buoy. Its speed dropped, and the boat behind it was unable to avoid the collision.

Police said there was no reason to suspect a crime. Their investigation will continue as a death investigation.
