US President Donald Trump expects the United States to have “operational control” of Greenland before his presidential term ends in January 2029, DR reports.
Trump made the comment in the US radio programme Real America’s Voice. Host Steve Gruber told Trump that he had previously predicted Greenland would be under US operational control before Trump left the White House.
“You will be right if you bet on it. Greenland is important from our standpoint. You should actually make that bet,” Trump said. Gruber replied that he had already done so, prompting Trump to respond: “Good.”
Neither Trump nor Gruber explained what they specifically meant by “operational control”.
The interview was published on Saturday, the same day Trump shared an image on his social media platform Truth Social that appeared to show a Greenlandic town, with his face edited behind a mountain and the words “Hello, Greenland!” at the top.
Trump also repeated his wish for the United States to control Greenland at a NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, a month ago.
